The audience eats it up, grateful for an artistic show of the grace and beauty in the scene. Lynsey, from Lumberton, is a former gymnast who's been strengthening her core since she was a preschooler. The lack of filming locations doesn’t detract from the festival, which is brought to life by the passionate fans who love to let loose with the cloud-shrouded Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop. It also has a classic getaway feel, and a bartender who knows his way around an old fashioned. The Lake Lure Inn has Johnny’s Cabin and Baby’s Cabin, where Swayze and Grey stayed during filming. The location has become Firefly Cove, which is a privately owned residential development and you can’t exactly roll up in your white Keds, jean shorts and leotard for a photo op. It was also the site of many interior dance scenes, but the cabins burned, the bridge is gone and the steps are overgrown. The Chimney Rock Camp For Boys was the site of dancers’ cabins, the golf course and the steps and bridge that Baby (Grey) shimmied over. Most of the filming locations in town either no longer exist or are no longer accessible to the public. It’s a two-day festival with a Friday night lakeside viewing of “Dirty Dancing” followed by a sun-splashed Saturday of dance contests, live music, boat tours and all the crazy for Swayze you can handle. This year’s event featured Franke Previte, who co-wrote the movie’s Academy Award-winning theme song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” Created as a fundraiser for pancreatic cancer research in memory of Swayze, it was embraced and expanded. ![]() The festival averages around 3,000 attendees - more than double the population of the town where it’s held. ![]()
